HQIS Celebrates Earth Day 2024
- Apr 20-2024
The HQIS Literacy Week is one of the most loved series of events at HQIS. We actively promote reading for pleasure and learning, offering every student plenty of reading opportunities. During Literacy Week, our students can explore new concepts, new ideas, places, and people, as well as having an enjoyable time while reading.
On Wednesday, our students dressed up as their favorite book characters. Costumes aside, every student had to bring the book and explain why they like it and the character they were “cosplaying”. This was not just a game: by acting as their favorite heroes, kids had the opportunity to bring their stories close to reality, expressing their creativity as well as expanding their communication skills.
On Thursday our Upper School houses (Crimson Cobras, Tangerine Tigers, Blue Bears, White Wolves) participated in Literacy Week. Every year, we provide a list of books, and our senior students need to read them. This epic quiz was just about these books, and our students answered correctly to almost all the questions!
At HQIS, poetry is an important part of our English and Chinese curriculum. We believe that poetry is a powerful teaching tool both in and out the classroom. Our students studied Shakespearean sonnets, and they composed wonderful poems to celebrate World Poetry Day.
One of the traditions of HQIS Literacy Week is the surprise visit of teachers and upper school students to our lower school students’ classrooms, where they read different stories to our children. We cultivate our children’s interest in reading with sharing and interactions, and this is very important because at the same time they develop their reading skills. In fact, reading stories instill a passion for reading.

Our teachers have been competing against each other for the title of Best Story Teller of the year!
On Friday, Primary School students went to Rainbow Bridge Theater for an exciting spelling bee competition followed by a closing ceremony for the perfect conclusion of this unforgettable week.
Literacy is the foundation for reading, writing, communicating and socializing, and a vital part of students’ overall development and HQIS supports literacy and language at every stage by any means. Every year, seeing our teachers and students together, learning and having fun during Literacy Week is for us a source of pride. All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of teachers of each grade and department and the support of our beloved community, therefore we want to thank all of you, dear HQISers, for making Literacy Week one of the most exciting events of the year.
